Counsel on the calendar, before the decision is already made.
A monthly retainer with the Intelligent Council. The same team, month after month, close enough to the business to answer in context rather than from a brief.
What this is for
The situations founders arrive with
01
The hard calls get made alone
Pricing, partnerships, a difficult hire, an aggressive competitor. The founder decides at eleven at night with nobody qualified to argue back.
02
Consultants arrive cold
Every new brief starts with four weeks of context-loading that the business pays for and learns nothing from.
03
Specialists are fragmented
A lawyer here, a CA there, an agency somewhere else, none of them aware of what the others advised.
Advice bought after the decision is made is not advice. It is a second opinion on something already spent.
The engagement
5 stages, each with a written deliverable.
Scope, fee and dates are fixed in the agreement before work begins. There are no open-ended engagements here.
01
Onboarding month
A compressed audit of brand, structure and exposure, so the counsel that follows is grounded in the actual business rather than the founder's summary of it.
02
Monthly council session
A working session with the principal and whichever specialists the month's agenda requires. Agenda set a week ahead, notes and decisions circulated after.
03
Between-session access
Direct line to the principal for decisions that will not wait for the next session. Answered within one working day.
04
Quarterly review
What was advised, what was done, what it moved. Written, and honest where the advice did not land.
05
Annual reset
Position, structure and protection re-examined against where the business has actually arrived, and the retainer rescoped or ended accordingly.

Whether this is the right engagement
Built for
- Decisions of consequence arriving monthly
- A founder without a peer to argue with
- Post-engagement clients who want the room kept open
Not this engagement
- Needing execution capacity rather than counsel
- Just one question to settle? One-Time Consulting fits better
Questions
Asked before every mandate.
What is the minimum term?+
Six months. Below that the onboarding month distorts the value, and neither side gets a fair read on whether it is working.
Who actually shows up?+
A named principal every session, plus the specialists the agenda calls for. The principal does not change without your agreement.
Can it convert into a project?+
Frequently. When a session surfaces work that needs building, it is scoped and priced separately, and the retainer fee is not double-charged against it.
